EWOK - Walnut, Pine Coasters & Himalayan Herbs
Every winter, the pine forests of the Kamand valley shed needles by the tonne, a fire hazard when they lie on the slopes. In EWOK’s hands they become coasters: coiled, stitched, and finished into objects you’d happily set a cup on.
EWOK, Enabling Women of Kamand, is a community livelihood model from Mandi, co-created with IIT Mandi. The word that matters is partners: more than sixty rural women co-own the work, rather than labouring at the end of someone else’s brand. Walnuts from local trees, reusable bags, and locally cultivated herbs round out the shelf.
It is what happens when a valley’s women, a forest’s surplus, and an institute’s patience meet.
Field note “The pine-needle coasters are the most sustainable thing I own. Beautifully made, and the story behind them makes them even better.”
