Minakriti - Aipan Art Name Plates, Coasters & Décor

CraftsmanshipCultureTraditionPeople

Aipan was never painted for decoration. In Kumaoni homes it was drawn at thresholds and on floors for occasions: white patterns of rice paste on a ground of red geru, made by women, for the gods and the household, and washed away when the occasion passed.

Minakriti, founded by Minakshi Khati in 2019, keeps the hand and the geometry alive by giving them new surfaces: nameplates, coasters, diyas, home décor. Thirty women artisans draw the old motifs from their own homes, which means the tradition now pays the very hands that carry it.

A Minakriti nameplate does what Aipan always did: it marks a threshold, and says who lives within.

Field note “Our Aipan nameplate is the most-asked-about thing in our home. It is art, it is identity, and it carries a story that a store-bought piece never could.”
