Woolknitters - Handcrafted Wool Eco Souvenirs

CraftsmanshipSustainable WorkTraditionPeople

Before the brooch, there is a sheep. Before the sheep, a shepherd. And before the shepherd, the long walk: the Gaddi routes that climb out of the Kullu and Kangra valleys every summer and come down again before the snows.

The Wool Knitters begin there. Working closely with Gaddi shepherds and the women artisans of Himachal, they take the wool of that walk and crochet it, by hand, into small, honest things: the Bhedu (sheep) brooch, yak brooches, birds, coasters, dolls. Nothing is hurried; everything carries the skill of hands that learned from older hands.

To wear a Bhedu on your coat is to carry a little of the grassland with you. It is wool, it is Himachal, and it keeps a craft, and the people who hold it, in work.

Field note “The Bhedu brooch is the cutest, most meaningful souvenir I have ever owned. It is wool, it is Himachal, it is love.”
